"Time is the final currency. Not money. Not power. The time will come When you will give Anything for one more hour." ~David Crosby
Time is the final currency.
Not money. Not power.
The time will come
When you will give
Anything for one more hour.
Today I learned
There are no secrets,
Only time for them to unfold
And the patience to watch
The scroll of truth
Slowly be unrolled.
There is a time to this.
There is a flow.
There is a tension here
Like a hard bent bow.
Ready to send up,
Send up another one,
Another spark in the night.
And suddenly you realize
That this time it is all right.
I watched the greatest miracle
Take three quarters of a year
To bring forth life
And tiny breath
For all the world to hear.
There is a time to this.
There is a flow.
There is a tension here
Like a hard bent bow.
Ready to send up,
Send up another one,
Another spark in the night.
And suddenly you realize
That this time it is all right.
~David Crosby
David Crosby’s song illustrates how the thought of losing life fills one with gratitude for this precious human existence. But luckily, you don’t have to suffer terminal illness to develop this attitude. In Joyful Path of Good Fortune Geshe Kelsang Gyatso states, “When we meditate on the great value and rarity of this precious human life we are doing the analytical meditation that causes us to develop a strong determination not to waste a moment of our human life and to make full use of it by putting Dharma into practice.“ After all, enlightenment entails gratitude for this precious human existence.
And accordingly, David Crosby’s near death experience has deeply affected his attitude toward life. According to Anthony de Mello, “Any time you are with anyone or think of anyone you must say to yourself: I am dying and this person too is dying, attempting the while to experience the truth of the words you are saying. If every one of you agrees to practice this, bitterness will die out, harmony will arise.”
